Curriculum development
All the teachers and I took part in an interesting inset day about curriculum design and development.
Our aim is to ensure that our curriculum is knowledge rich and provides pupils with all the stepping stones that they need to prepare them for their next stage, whatever that may be.
Alongside our curriculum we want to offer lots of enrichment activities, mental health and wellbeing education as well as therapeutic outdoor learning in Forest school and competitive sporting opportunities.
We also shared lots of thinking around retrieval and giving our pupils opportunities to recall prior learning. Being able to recall learning from last week, last month and last year, means that the learning has stuck and the knowledge is there in their long term memories.
So when you ask your child what they have done at school and they can't remember..... ask again!

Mrs Good always said she would retire if a pupil ever made it to level 100 on Mental Mathletes! Well it has happened!
CONGRATULATIONS to Freya Bishop in year 6! What an achievement. You have persevered and displayed resilience, when it hasn't been easy.
Sadly, Mr Fellowes will not allow me to retire. He thinks I am too young! So we had a celebration assembly instead. Freya received an Amazon voucher for her achievements and we had a video message from a special guest!

In EYFS and KS1 last term the children learnt all about castles. They learnt about the coronation, castles in the UK and the features of castles, like turrets and moats. In DT the children made a model of a castle. They secured different materials to make their castles strong and some of them even had a draw-bridge!

In Year 3/4, the children have enjoyed a fantastic culmination of all their learning in the Stars and Stripes topic.
In Design Technology, the children evaluated the quality of different sauces for a traditional American Pot Pie and created their own design criteria brief. They learnt how to make pastry and safely prepare vegetables using various kitchen tools before creating their own mini pot pies. Children also incorporated this knowledge into their writing, by writing detailed specific instructions about the process they had carried out. Finally getting to taste and evaluate their product against the design criteria. Yum!
After researching traditional American foods, games and music, the children helped to plan a ‘USA day’ event. They explored how to used mixed media to replicate the USA flag, before experiencing a ‘pot luck’ style buffet to sample and discuss their opinions of American foods. Then they collaborated in various American games including Four Square, Basketball, American Football and Red, White and Blue tag. We ended the day with a quiz to recall the knowledge developed over the unit of learning. How many of these questions can you answer about America?

Before half-term we were lucky enough to have a visit from Author Daniel Henshaw. He shared his stories in assembly and carried out workshops with years 3,4,5 and 6. The children were really excited by the mystery of the stolen wedding dress. Poor Miss Tierney had her wedding dress stolen and the children reenacted the story!
I think everyone agreed that Daniel was really inspiring and he even signed books in the library after-school.

Thanks to our learning mentors Mrs Jamieson and Mrs Bromfield we have a fabulous new display in the corridor. Every child in the school contributed their handprint. Be the 'I' in Kind represents our Abbeys value of Kindness! We choose to be kind and considerate at all times. It is an important part of the ethos at Abbeys. Over time we will be placing photos of our pupils being kind and those displaying random acts of kindness around the edges of the display.

Congratulations to both Mrs Bromfield and Mrs Shore! You've both been mugged!
Mrs Bromfield you were mugged by Mrs Jamieson. She's noticed the positive impact you are having on the children you are working with. We are all so happy that you have joined the Abbeys Team.
Mrs Bromfield- didn't hang about! She mugged Mrs Shore for always being positive and supportive. I couldn't agree more! We are lucky to have such a dedicated team at Abbeys. I wonder who will be next?
